What Music Genre Would Suit My Top 10 Masked Singer Non-Musical Contestants

Every Sunday, I wake up, make my morning coffee, sit on the couch and catch up on the week’s Saturday Night Live. Once I get my laughs in, I scroll through Hulu, and find myself in the rabbit hole that is The Masked Singer.

At first, I had my hesitations of watching the show, then I watched an elephant--The Elephant--absolutely wreck “ Friday I’m in Love.” Boom. I was hooked. So now that I have seen actually every episode at my disposal, I believe that I am fit to give my opinion on some of the non-musical celebrities that have competed on the show, rank my top 10, and give some input on what musical genre they might excel in.

Starting with number 10, Miss Wendy Williams herself. Tiktok took her performance, and made it a viral sound..THAT'S HOW GOOD IT WAS. Just Kidding. Wendy definitely had the stage presence, but some vocal training is a must for her singing career to really take off. I can see Wendy and Dua Lipa sharing the spotlight (that is if she can pronounce her name correctly). Wendy could also have a feature on a Megan Thee Stallion song. I can see that duo breaking records.

Up next, at spot number 9, is Tony Hawk. Yes, Tony Hawk was on this show. No kickflips, but I think he would have the music industry on its side if he dropped a New Wave inspired album. Yes, I am taking inspiration from his performance of “Friday I’m in Love,” but can’t you just hear “Love My Way” by The Psychedelic Furs in his soft voice? I can. And I would like to add it to all of my playlists right now.

My number 8 spot is going to have to go to Tyler “Ninja” Belvins, renowned gaming personality. Calvin Harris feat. Ninja is all I can ask for. Put his voice against some vibey-bedroom EDM beats, and I really think you could have a hit. The Tiktok kids would love it, millennials would dig up their love for 2014-2016 Calvin Harris, and blast this on repeat. Might I say...hyperpop would also work SO well for Ninja.

Sweet sweet number 7, who will fill this spot? None other than snowboarder Chloe Kim. Chloe went for a Doja Cat classic, and it WORKED! I can hear her voice playing on repeat through TikTok trends, but I also have a different route for Kim to go on: Broadway. I think Chloe’s voice can switch from dialogue to ballad in a second, so where else should she be other than the Broadway stage? Probably on the slopes, but still her voice made me do a 180!

The 6th spot goes to figure skater Johnny Weir. Hearing Johnny sing Gaga, made me realize how perfect his voice would be in a 2000s punk song. Imagine going to Warped Tour to see Johnny Weir. Incredible. I would say start off with some All Time Low vocals, then move into the Fall Out Boy side of the radio, but still great stuff Johnny.

Sherri Shepherd is up next at number 5. All I wanted to hear her voice sing was a Jason Mraz cover. Is that too much to ask for? Imagine a bedroom love-song pop album from her. It would be a no skip album. I can promise you that.

Number 4...who will it be? Usually this non-musical contestant is the one doing the announcing, it's Tom Bergeron! This is someone who’s voice we should TACO-bout. Michael Bublé watch out, Bergeron would absolutely smash a big band EP. Or even, old love songs you walk around on a spring day too. Tom’s voice bellows and lingers in your ears like a sweet treat in your mouth. How could you not want to hear more?

Getting into the top 3, a comedian dressed as a poodle? Margaret Cho. Cho came out swinging with some rock classics, and I want her to keep going. Imagine Margaret Cho covering Miley Cyrus’ cover of Blondie’s heart of Glass. If we could barely turn off Miley’s, how much would we love Maragret Cho’s? The only way to find out if for her to take this momentum and bring back rock!

Number 2...well he’s one of two. is Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong! Tommy already has music out, but if he were just starting out as a musical artist, I can hear him in two genres..1. Tame Impala indie synth beats….2. Johnny Cash cover band. No in-between. The consensus is that a strong string instrument needs to be in the mix for Mr. Tommy Chong.

And last, but not least...Number 1. Rob Gronkowski. The White Tiger stole my heart. Gronk came out swinging with the Vanilla Ice classic “Ice Ice Baby,” but I want to see him kill a Motley Crue song. I really think his vocals could match Vince Neils, it might just be his energy, but dare I say he’s the Tommy Lee of today? Maybe a stretch, but a Gronk 80s album would be sure to win a super bowl.

Thanks for reading! Hope you all enjoy as much as I did getting to do my research!

xx Juliana
