How do you film a music video in the midst of a pandemic with one of your band mates across the pond? Just ask The Backfires!

Their debut EP “Consider the Backfires” dropped just 9 days ago and has already racked up thousands of streams. The band formed in 2018 under the name “Qualia Noir”--which in turn backfired, leading the international indie-rock band to change their name to The Backfires.

The EP contains 6 songs, two of which have music videos, and one in the works. I had the honor of going behind the scenes of the “Going Gets Easy” music video earlier this month!

This will be the band's third music video, following “The Man” and “Anything”---both released as singles and as a part of the new EP.

The Backfires is made up of frontman Alex Gomez, lead guitarist Harry Ruprecht, and lead bassist Matt Walter. Gomez and Walter both reside in the United States while Ruprecht is living life in England. Pre-pandemic, the band toured all over London and the East Coast, in cities like New York, Fairfax and Hamden. Now during COVID-19, they are finding new ways to stay connected as mates, as a band, and with their audience.

“There’s this general idea that the music is what connects us,” A. Gomez describes. The video for “Going Gets Easy” is being filmed by Benjy Berkowitz and Ollie Uglow from separate countries but all follows the idea of filmmaker and director Uglow.

So how did they do it? How do you make a video that seamlessly flows with not only the music, but the director's vision when one director is 3,000 miles away? Uglow and Ruprecht kicked off the filming process.

Frontman Alex Gomez explains how,“They shot first and then we saw the footage to sort of know what to base it off of and then we’re shooting over here (NYC)”.

The video is all based around the idea that music is the greatest connection. Alex Gomez mentions that “the story is basically the three of us in three separate cities, three different places, kind of going about our days if you will--then we start to hear each other playing. It's this kind of supernatural sound that we can hear through time and space just because of our connections as a band.”

From what I got to see, the music video really shows how important music is especially in a time like this. As the shoot wraps, lead bassist Matt Walter comments “Who knew acting could be this easy.”
